Writers’ Group – Beloved Characters, New Platforms: Top Creators Share the How-Tos of Writing for Licensed Content

Multi-channel. Multimedia. Multisensory. Kids are discovering and engaging with beloved characters or celebrities from every possible platform, which makes writing for licensed content one of the most exciting fields in children’s media. We’ll talk to some top creators from Disney, Scholastic, Mattel, and more, about how they create fresh, creative content for print, apps, and toys that gives audiences entirely new ways to discover and experience the brand. This event is limited to 15 members and it will fill quickly.

More about our speakers:  

Judy Katschke is a bestselling children’s author and creator specializing in branded content. Judy has written over 200 books based on Disney, DreamWorks, Nickelodeon, Hasbro and Mattel licenses. She is currently writing the ‘Marguerite Henry’s Misty Inn’ series for Simon and Schuster as well as Scholastic Reading Club’s ‘First Grade Friends Forever.’

Judy’s work in television includes the creation of Nickelodeon’s ‘Eureeka’s Castle,’ the first original program in the Nick Jr. block, and serving as head writer on ‘Steampipe Alley,’ a comedy/variety show for kids. Judy also wrote televised parades including the ‘Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade’ where her favorite task was describing the character balloons.

Judy was born and raised in New York City where she still lives and writes.

Michele R. Wells is a writer, editor, and narrative designer with more than two decades of experience in content creation, development, and strategy. She built her career in publishing, working for companies such as Penguin Random House, Simon & Schuster, McGraw-Hill, and others, before transitioning to entertainment, where she is the executive editor of interactive content at Disney. She was the Founding Chairperson of First Book-Brooklyn, a nonprofit organization that provides new books to kids in need; is on the Advisory Board of Library for All; and volunteers regularly with NYC- and LA-based literacy and mentoring programs. 


Sara Farber is a big kid who’s spent the past eighteen years designing stuff for little kids. She’s currently writing/producing a comedic series for Toca Boca’s new digital video division in Brooklyn, NY. Sara’s worn many hats in her career, serving as Director of Content Design at Fisher-Price/Mattel (toy hats), Manager of Global Product Development at VTech (VHats) and Interactive Producer at Sesame Workshop (furry hats). She has also collaborated with Gund, Hasbro, Spin Master, and WowWee to create play patterns, scripts, and intellectual properties. Sara has developed content for hundreds of fun things to play with, including: apps, digital books, web connected toys, electronic games, plug and play video games, virtual worlds, hardware/software platforms, learning toys, mechanized plush, talking dolls/toys, and of course… board games!
Sara is Co-Founder of Galactic Sneeze, a fun stuff think tank that invents toys and games. Schmovie: The Hilarious Game of Made-Up Movies, is now available in specialty stores nationwide and on Amazon.
She recently launched a Kickstarter for a new adult game, Spank the Yeti: The Party Game of Questionable Decisions.
Sara lives in Brooklyn with her husband, daughter, and goldfish.
