More about our speakers:
Originally from Pascagoula, MS, three time Emmy Award winning composer/trombonist/ukulele player J. Walter Hawkes has been an active performer, composer, and arranger/orchestrator in New York City for two decades. He has played and/or recorded with some people you’ve possibly heard of, (Elvis Costello, Norah Jones, Jon Hendricks) and many more you haven’t. It’s also very possible that he’s freaked out your little kids with the music he’s composed for “Wonder Pets,”(Nick) “Third & Bird,”(BBC & Disney Channel) “Blue’s Clues”(Nick) as well as other TV cartoony gems on Cartoon Network and the Disney Channel. He is now the Musical Director of “Peg + Cat,” an animated show teaching math concepts to pre-schoolers on PBS.
Michael Rubin is an Emmy Award winning music producer, composer, and lyricist best known for his work in children’s television. Rubin has created iconic musical themes, scores, and songs for shows including Bubble Guppies, Blue’s Clues, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, and Jack’s Big Music Show, among others. His songs have been performed by Ray Charles, Patti LaBelle, Macy Gray, Randy Travis, India.Arie, Nell Carter, Toni Braxton, Phoebe Snow, The Persuasions, and many others.
Michael began his professional career making music for advertising, founding his music production company Murmur Music in 1993. In 1995, Rubin (along with writing partner Nick Balaban,) created the music and sound design for the pilot episode of what would become the Peabody Award winning Nick Jr. classic Blue’s Clues, one of the most watched and influential preschool television shows of all time. In 2007, Murmur Music partnered with Dubway studios to form Rhumba Recorders, a full-service music and audio production company located in lower Manhattan. Recent projects include audio post for Nickelodeon’s highly acclaimed Wallykazam! (52 episodes) and Bubble Guppies for which Mike and his colleagues have created the scores and songs for four seasons (80 episodes) of the hit show.
Mike’s work on Bubble Guppies has earned him two Emmy nominations (2016 and 2014) an Emmy win (2014) and an Annie Award nomination (2013). Mike also received Emmy nominations for his work on Jack’s Big Music Show (2008) and Blues Clues (2002). Rubin frequently sings and voices characters in the shows that feature his music. He also originated and performed the character of Mailbox for 125 episodes of Blue’s Clues, a fact which seems to impress people more than almost anything else!
