You also own the Kids with Disabilities style guide; use and update the Common Sense Education style guide; and contribute to the product style guide where it overlaps with the house style guide.
  • For some terms (“Latinx,” “digital citizenship,” etc.), you will do research, including interviews, and present your findings to relevant staff members to decide on updates to the style guide.
  • You will review user interface copy for accessibility and appropriate Lexile levels.
  • You will fact-check names, titles, dates, statistics, and other basic information, and you will prove our most high-visibility products.

Managing

  • You will manage a team of contract copy editors to ensure that quality work is delivered on schedule.
  • You will manage requests for updates to the house style guide.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion

  • You will be responsible for developing, maintaining, and distributing copy editing guidelines and best practices surrounding the issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

You will stay up to date on inclusive language and principles across: accessibility, body, citizenship status, disability and illness, gender and sexuality, race and ethnicity, religion, and socioeconomic status. You will stay up to date on language around identities and intersectionalities as the English language and U.S. culture evolve in these areas.
  • You will collaborate with the senior director of content and stay up to date with best practices in the areas of diversity, equity, and inclusion and use them in your work, keeping content-creating teams and the greater organization apprised.
  • Working with the senior director of content, you will occasionally do full sensitivity reads, working one-on-one with editors to write and edit through an inclusive lens.
